There are five different types of musical notes: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. Each of these notes is played for a different amount of time. The amount of time each note is played will be described below, along with a picture of each note. The amount of time each note is played is also called the note's duration.
Whole Note
A whole note has the longest duration.
In 4/4 time, a whole note has 4 beats.
Half Note
A half note has half the duration as a whole note
In 4/4 time, a half note has 2 beats.
Quarter Note
A quarter note has a fourth of the duration of a whole note.
In 4/4 time, a quarter note has 1 beat.
Eighth Note
An eighth note has half the duration of a quarter note.
In 4/4 time, an eighth note has a half of a beat.
Sixteenth Note
A sixteenth note has half the duration of an eighth note.
In 4/4 time, a sixteenth note has a fourth of a beat.
